Every month in Miami there are exciting events, exhibitions, and festivals taking place. In January, Miami kicks off the new year by taking its residents and visitors on a tour of its architectural, artistic, and cultural heritage through its annual Art Deco Weekend. During the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, Miami Beach became the capital of Art Deco architecture. Thanks to the Miami Design Preservation League, South Beach has maintained its historic Art Deco buildings with bright colors and funky designs.
Art Deco Weekend offers tours of the unique architecture, as well as a fashion show, music and film festivals, an auto show, lectures, parades, and so much more. Of course, there are also plenty of fun activities for children, and there is even a parade for dogs to show off costumes. This year the festival included an Antique Experience that featured an exhibition of a variety of Art Deco antiques and objects.
Even if you missed the fun over the weekend, you can always stroll around South Beach to see the lasting relics of the Art Deco era. Or, you can pop over to the Design District, on the northern edge of Midtown, to peruse that neighborhood’s year-round devotion to fashion, design, art, and architecture.
