Miami International Airport is continuing to add new routes to international destinations. This week Qatar Airways began offering the first nonstop flights from Miami to the Middle East. Believe it or not, Doha, Qatar and Miami, Florida have a bit in common. Both places have strong tourism sectors, nice beaches, and while Doha is a hub to other cities in the Middle East, Miami is the gateway to the Americas. The five-star airline acknowledged that Miami’s art, fashion, and international business make it an attractive destination.
Interestingly, a Qatari firm purchased the upscale St. Regis Bal Harbour resort earlier this year. It will be great if the Qatar and Miami connection grows and other business opportunities arise. The Middle East’s interest in Miami isn’t actually surprising. The only surprising part is that it is just now starting. Several cities in the Middle East have fascinating urban layouts and building designs. For example, Dubai is a modern metropolis with every development bigger and better than the previous one, Abu Dhabi is becoming a cultural capital with European style museums, and Doha has modern architecture and world-class cultural attractions. All of this pretty much aligns with Miami.
If nothing else, this new connection continues to bolster Miami’s status as a top international destination. More and more countries are recognizing all that the city has to offer and not just in terms of fun in the sun. We’ve got a strong banking and finance sector, a venture capital and start up community emerging, as well as a creative art and design scene, and of course so much more. There really is something for everyone, and it is the epitome of an international melting pot.
