Beatriz Milhaze, known by the worldwide art community for her botanical scenes, will open her first solo expo in the United States here in Miami. The exhibit, to be shown at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, formerly know as the Miami Art Museum, will mark the debut for the “new” museum. The museum was recently renamed after the well-known Miami real estate developer Jorge Pérez. Located by the Biscayne Bay, the it is an impressive architectural feat designed by Herzog & de Meuron that should attract locals and tourists alike. Although there have been many group showings, this exhibit signifies the museum’s first true retrospective
Tobias Ostrander, the museum’s chief curator, said he chose the Milhaze exhibit because of the pieces’ content – overlapping blossoms, stripes and unfurling leaves – all scenes with which the Miami community can relate. The growing size of the Brazilian community here in Miami is another reason why Ostrander may have thought the exhibit was a fitting one.
The move to have Ms. Milhaze’s first United States expo in Miami highlights the city’s continued popularity to the international community. Whether for nightlife, beaches, restaurants or museums Miami’s draw is exploding onto the global scene. We recently wrote about the rise in popularity of downtown Miami condos, and Ms. Milhaze’s exhibit should continue to pump money into the Miami community.
