Tony Cho, known as a Wynwood area real-estate entrepreneur has taken the first steps toward giving his Gateway project a new back yard. The Gateway project was taken on by Cho’s firm Metro 1 and involves the conversion of on old building into retail space. Found in the Design District, full of commercial buildings, the area could use some more green space, and Cho aims to do something about it. He sponsored an architectural competition, open to applicants world wide, to find just the right design for the park. Ironically, out of over 200 entries, the winning entry came from two Florida International professors, Roberto Rovira and Nick Gelpi, with help from artist Jim Drain.
Named Wynwood Greenhouse, the futuristic park has an open greenhouse structure with various artistic touches to make it blend well in the trendy area. Originally, budgeted to cost around $500,000, Cho and his team of designers expect the true cost to be much higher. In addition to his own funding, Cho expects to be able to raise other funds through donations and public contributions. The three gentlemen responsible for the design took into account many factors when creating their submission. Drain describes the park as “A place for butterflies, and for social butterflies, too.” The designers used urban elements like moveable seating and a walkway to make the park fit the character of the surrounding area.
In the recent past Wynwood has seen an explosion of growth. A popular hangout for young people, the area draws those who are there to work, as well as play. Its nightlife and artistic nature have drawn more and more people to the area, and thus many developers already have plans to begin constructing new housing complexes in the surrounding areas. Cho noticed that as the area gained in popularity, the addition of a park would be an easy way to add something of value.
