More than a century after Henry Flagler built his Miami train depot, All Aboard Florida is planning on reshaping South Florida’s transportation system. The proposed mega station would revitalize an area between Fifth and Sixth streets, not only with the addition of a train station but also with retailers, offices, apartments, and even a food market. The world’s great cities all have intricate transportation systems, and the implementation of MiamiCentral, the name given to the station by All Aboard Florida, would be a step towards making Miami one of these cities.
Ironically, All Aboard is a subsidiary of the company Flagler founded all those years ago. With the timetable set for between 24 and 36 months, developers and architects alike are planning to drastically change the city in an unparalleled way. The new station would bring jobs to the area unlike many projects before it, due to its sweeping nature. The plan calls for parking decks, new stores for visitors, restaurants for travelers, apartments near the station for those who commute to Orlando frequently, and a food market for those wishing to pick up groceries on their way home.
The high-speed rail service to Orlando isn’t the only possibility being looked at. Tri-Rail, the South Florida regional commuter service that operates west of I-95, and All Aboard are in talks to create a terminal at the new station. The terminal would allow the station to touch a vastly broader number of people in the South Florida area, especially those doing business in both Miami and Orlando. Detailed site plans are already under review by city planners, with the results to be returned in the coming months.
If the project goes according to plan, it would be a great addition to the city.
