After being delayed by the financial crisis, MDM Development could see their proposed $600 million project approved in the near future. Dubbed the Marriott Marquis World Center, the development is set to have its case heard by the Miami City Commission. Because of the scale, and some unique oddities, the downtown Miami development needs a few special exemptions from the city before it can begin seeking building permits. The building is part of a larger initiative to renovate a 30-acre area in downtown.
MDM is looking to completely reshape the area around 700 N. Miami Ave., should the Commission approve. With the planned purchase of the Miami Worldcenter to the east, and All Aboard Florida’s proposed MiamiCentral station to the west, the area is poised for some serious upgrades in the coming years. The Marriot Marquis World Center will have a 350,000 sq. foot exhibition space, large enough to fit a Boeing 747, a three-story convention center, and a 1,800-room hotel on top. However, the intricate design and architecture of the building has stopped the developers from getting a free pass, as the Commission has to approve any parts of the building that break the city’s building code.
Coupled with the high-speed rail line, the addition of an upscale business center could really benefit the Downtown area. Travelers from Orlando, or any other part of Florida, could easily take the new line in to Downtown and quickly walk to the convention center, then upstairs to their hotel. With plans for a total makeover for the area, look for nearby Downtown real estate to gain in popularity. The convention center would be likely to hold a multitude of events, not just conferences for business professionals.
