Traditionally when looking at homes in the past men and women followed typical gender roles, with women more focused on how the kitchens were designed and generally attracted to open spaces, whereas men were more interested in garages and basements. However, the National Association of Realtors recently released a survey that revealed interesting changes to these previous tendencies. Men now state modern kitchen appliances as essential when considering potential homes while women are drawn more to single-level residences, showing the changing dynamic of what modern couples consider important aspects when shopping for real estate. Other features men found attractive in listings were granite countertops, kitchen islands and walk-in closets in the master bedroom, although it’s probably safe to assume most women wouldn’t oppose to that last feature as well. Both genders agreed on the importance of basements when evaluating prospective new homes, with 16 percent of men and 13 percent of women citing them as essential features when considering making a purchase. A final, very interesting finding of the survey is that men were slightly more likely to shop around, with 15 percent saying that they planned to stay in their current home forever. This contradicts the typical assumption that women are more likely to window shop, as 24 percent of women stated that they had no desire to move from their current home at any point in the future. This survey illuminates interesting changes in the dynamic of couples that are searching for a new home, and presents sellers with important tips for how to make listings more appealing to future buyers.
