Miami-Dade County just scored the number five spot on County Health Rankings annual list of the
healthiest counties in Florida. Miami-Dade was preceded by St. Johns County, which ranked first, followed by Collier, Martin, Seminole and then Miami-Dade to round out the top five. These rankings were published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, who determined them using a number of factors related to health including exercise, education, employment, and ability to access healthcare.
Miami-Dade also scored the top stop in the ranking for length of life and health behaviors, with some of the lowest rates in the state for amount of adults who smoke, obesity, teen pregnancies, alcohol-induced driving deaths and excessive drinking. Lillian Rivera, who is Miami-Dade’s administrator of the Florida Department of Health remarked on the ranking in a recent new release, “we are committed to making Miami-Dade County a healthier place to live, learn work and play. The County Health Rankings help us to understand what factors have influenced good health in our community as well as identify areas where we must work harder.” Some of these areas for improvement were access to clinical care, unemployment, and child poverty rates where the country scored poorly. However overall Miami-Dade had some of the most impressive health stats in the whole state, particularly in the area of consumers enrolled for health coverage, which was among the highest in the country. The whole Miami area scored well on the survey, particularly compared with the nationwide numbers that sagged behind
South Florida quite a bit.
