Driving down through Florida via the freeway can be timely and exhausting. However soon, driving may not be the only option to travel between Orlando and Miami. On Wednesday, The All Aboard Florida train that would link Orlando International Airport and Miami won approval from the state board. This allows the project, that would create a 235 mile system, to borrow $1.75 billion dollars at a low interest and tax exempt rate.
The trains would be able to get up to speeds of 125 miles per hour. They would take about three hours between Miami and Orlando, cutting off about a half hour of driving time for passengers. All Aboard Florida plans to have 32 passengers per day, and 14 freight trains would still be able to use the tracks each day. Tickets would cost close to $100 each way.
On Wednesday at the meeting, 80 people took to the podium to share their views on the proposed project, with a few more than half showing approval. Those who disapprove mostly came from the Treasure Coast area, and argue that the project will decrease quality of life in small towns along the track because boats will be slowed by draw bridges that will have to remain down more often, and traffic will be tied up. However, Mike Reininger, President of All Aboard Florida, asserted that intersections would not be held up more than 45 seconds by the trains.
Virtually all of Central Florida’s local, state, and congressional leaders support All Aboard Florida. U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Orlando, said the train “brings jobs to Florida. It reduces traffic, which affects us all.”
Wednesday’s approval by the state board sets All Aboard Florida on track to begin operations in 2017.
All Aboard Florida is a great example of the state’s development as transportation improves and connects different parts of the state. These trains between Central Florida and South Florida will improve both areas, and make both Orlando and Miami better cities for business.
