0 What Mothers Want in Their Houses

mothers want in their housesWhat do mothers want in their houses? As perhaps the most important member of many families, what Mom wants is pretty important. Market Watch spoke with Jeff Martel, a real estate professional with Better Home and Gardens, to find out what mothers want in their houses.

“Ten years ago, the only thing families were looking for was square footage and a large yard,” he said. “Configuration of the home is more important now,” as people prefer open floor plans rather than separate dining and living rooms.

“We see less and less formal spaces,” Martel said. “Everything happens in the kitchen,” he said. “Kids use the islands now for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” he said. He sees less people looking for formal dining rooms and more for kitchens with a lot of space and multiple islands.

According to real estate professionals here are the things many mothers want in their house:

  1. Office Nook: Working moms want an office space that’s a part of the family hang-out area. Mothers want to work and supervise simultaneously. “You want a family office that’s very visible with a direct sightline to the kitchen,” he says.
  2. Garage Access: Easy access to the garage from the home is important. Many moms don’t want to lug children up and down stairs to their garage.
  3. Mud Room: “You want a ‘mud room’ that has a bench and some storage for boots that’s done in a hardwood or laminate where you can drop everything like backpacks and jackets,” Martel adds. An area to take shoes off and store bags, jackets and more is helpful to keep homes clean.
  4. Built In Storage: Kids, and parents, have a lot of stuff. The more storage to organize toys, clothing, books, etc, the better.
