The construction of a passenger light rail system over Biscayne Bay to link Miami and Miami Beach is once again a possibility. About ten years ago, the cities had plans to build this sort of transportation system, but officials ended up having to ditch the idea because of a lack of funding and insufficient political support.
Over the last few years, both areas have undergone noticeable changes that have augmented the necessity and popularity of this potential project. There are growing numbers of students and professionals moving into the urban centers of the two cities, with Brickell condos and Miami Beach condos experiencing significant occupancy rate increases. As a result, the already congested streets are even more clogged with on the move residents and tourists. Many of these residents and tourists are from a generation that prefers the convenience of public transportation.
Ideally, an expansion of the current public transportation system, particularly this link from downtown Miami to South Beach, will help to alleviate some of this exasperating traffic congestion. This will also make Miami more attractive and put it along the lines of other major, international cities, which boast easily navigable urban atmospheres brimming with restaurants, bars, and activities.
