In the near future, Miami Beach may really have the dog days of summer by welcoming canines to its shores several times per week! At present, the city of Miami Beach has pretty strict rules against dogs, or any other pets, venturing onto the beach. However, because of the demand for dog-friendly beaches, the city is toying with the idea of changing the city ordinance prohibiting hounds from digging in the sand and frolicking in the waves. The goal is to designate set times for dog owners to be able to accompany their pooches onto the sand and will even allow them to swim leash-free. Of course, the new rule will come with specific conditions, including requiring doggie owners to apply for a permit and prove the dog has received certain vaccinations.
It’s kind of strange that dogs can’t romp on the beaches now. In general, Miami Beach is pretty dog-friendly. While strolling down any of the main avenues, you’re bound to play chicken with tourists who can’t control their rented motorbikes and dodge plenty of dogs roaming about on leashes. A simple walk down some of Miami Beach’s busier streets can be a real test of agility if you don’t pay attention.
A lot of Miami Beach residents have a pet of some sort, and there are lots of pet-friendly South Beach condos and Sunny Isles Beach condos. Some condo buildings do impose weight or breed restrictions (think Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, not German Shepherds or Pit Bulls). There are also at least five dog parks where mutts can wander and sniff freely. There are some U.S. beach towns that designate an entire swath of coastline for beach lovers and man’s best friend. Although Miami Beach isn’t planning to be that generous with its prized possession, we’re glad that the city is considering loosening up a bit and will allow more creatures to enjoy its best attribute.
